HOW YOUNG KWAME NKRUMAH OF GHANA OVERCAME ALL ODD, EXCELLED IN ACADEMICS, BECAME GIANT LEADER | The African Time Magazine

Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Philadelphia in 1935 to begin undergraduate study at Lincoln University. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Sociology magna cum laude, Lincoln admitted him to its Theological Seminary in 1939 for an additional degree in Sacred Theology.

It was at this time, however, that Nkrumah began concurrent enrollment at the University of Pennsylvania in the hopes of acquiring multiple degrees simultaneously. Supporting himself through a precarious combination of scholarships and seasonal work in the segregated shipyards of Philadelphia, Nkrumah regularly visited Harlem and Washington to speak on anti-imperial themes in churches, on street corners, at political rallies, and in classrooms.
In so doing, he managed to meet such prominent intellectuals of the African diaspora as C.L.R. James, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Marcus Garvey. As he later recalled in his autobiography, “Life would have been so much easier if I could have devoted all my time to study. As things were, however, I was always in need of money.”
After receiving his Master’s degree from Penn’s Graduate School of Education in 1941, Nkrumah began another program of study with the Department of Philosophy on a University Scholarship. His advisor Glen Morrow noted that he satisfied the requirements for a Master’s degree in Philosophy in 1943, and by 1944 it appears that he had passed his preliminary exams for a doctorate.
He then began working as a Twi instructor for Zelig Harris in a new African Studies graduate group, and in 1945 he left the United States for London and Manchester. He finally returned to the Gold Coast in 1947.

AFCON 2023: MYSTERIOUS GOAL THAT SHOCKED WORLD, DEFIES LAWS OF NATURE, SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES (Must Read) | The African Time Magazine
Courtesy: Sports Corner

All scientists of physics, reason and logic demand the cancellation of the African Nations Championship after this illogical goal that the human mind cannot comprehend.
Watch: The Congo national team gets a free kick next to the touchline and all the players are waiting for the ball to be passed across, but what the Congolese player did with this kick shocked the entire continent of Africa.
The Guinean goalkeeper took two steps away from his goal because it was normal for the Congolese player to cross into the penalty area, but he did something amazing that the human mind cannot comprehend.
Despite the impossibility of shooting from this impossible place, the player insisted on shooting the ball on the goal and fired a shot that violated all the laws of physics and logic, causing the goalkeeper to lose the ability to move.
What is strange and weird is that the ball seems to have gone over the goal, and the goalkeeper is looking at it and his heart is reassured that it has come out safely, but he was surprised by external forces that made the ball go into the net in a miraculous way that shocked everyone.
Watch the goal of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which violates the laws of nature, logic and physics, against Guinea after a strange execution of the free kick in an unbelievable way.

AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK-AfDB Set To Begin Disbursement Of $540m SAPZs Fund | The African Time Magazine

All is set for the African Development Bank (AfDB) to commence the disbursement of $540 million to the first phase of states in Nigeria for the development of Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs). This comes as Vice President Kashim Shettima called for immediate action, saying it is time for the government and its Development Partners to start walking the talk.

As part of moves by the Nigerian Government and the Bank to ensure Food Security in the country, three States are to benefit from phase one of the development of processing zones, includes Oyo, Kaduna and Cross River, while others are to get theirs as soon as they are through with documentation.
The Senior Special Adviser on Industrialization to the AfDB President, Prof. Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, disclosed this on Monday when a delegation of the Bank and that of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) presented their separate reports on the status of projects being executed in Nigeria to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.
Making AfDB’s presentation to the Vice President, Oyelaran-Oyeyinka said, “The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) is an initiative of the African Development Bank that is aimed at turning the rural landscape into economic zones of prosperity and harnessing the power of commercial agriculture and food.

“The primary objective is to support inclusive and sustainable agro-industrial development in Nigeria. The phase one of the project is at the point of disbursement. Kaduna, Oyo and Cross River States are all in the process of receiving disbursements and we hope for the other states, they can speed up with their documentation so that we can fast-track these States. “We raised $540,000,000 in catalytic funding and we expect every state to find a partner that will bring equity and join up with them. It is a government-enabled project but private-sector driven.
The SSA to the AfDB President further explained that the first phase of SAPZs is being implemented in seven states, namely Cross River, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Ogun, and Oyo, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Ogun state found a partner for the project and decided not to take the loan. We are basically going to distribute the loan to the other states. The next thing is preparation for phase two with 27 states. The demand is enormous but we have to prioritise those who move fast. “We have set up eligibility criteria for the states and to rank them. We expect them to have a feasibility report, environmental impact study and a commitment to counterpart funding,” Oyelaran-Oyeyinka added.
In another report on the visit to the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited as earlier commissioned by the Vice President, the Head of Investment and Technology Promotion Office at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Abimbola Olufore Wycliffe, told VP Shettima that the recovery plan for the company would include revitalizing through rehabilitation, modernization and expansion.
She said,
“Single-phase turnaround for the entire plant is challenging due to heavy investments and a prolonged revenue generation timeline. Convert the integrated steel plant into strategic business units (SBUs) to serve as profit centers. “Conduct opportunity studies for each SBU, focusing on incremental investments, raw material availability, labor, utilities, and market demand. Prioritize SBUs with lower investments and quicker positive cash flows (the low-hanging fruits)”.
She further called for the reinvestment of profits from each SBU in ASC to reduce the burden of incremental investment on the Nigerian economy, even as she recommended the enhancement of foreign exchange earnings and contribution to local economic development in the country
In his response, Vice President Shettima called for immediate action, saying all hands must be on deck to ensure that the visions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are delivered to the Nigerian people.
Noting that it is time to walk the talk, the VP said, “We have passed the age of talking; we have to walk the talk. We can talk from now till eternity and it does not mean anything if there is no action and hence we must make this work. We just must.
“We have not seen beyond the depth of our pockets; what comes to us is more important than what comes to the generality of the people. Things must change.
“I read a book on how Korea transformed itself with no natural resources, how they started producing steel against all odds, how they went into shipbuilding; and how Hyundai, Daewoo, Samsung, Kia came about. I believe that when there is a will there is always a way. We have to walk the talk,” the Vice President stated.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
On behalf of myself, Mokwa Council members and the good people of Mokwa Local Government, we seize this opportunity to extend greetings to our brothers and sisters from the Christian community on the special occasion of Christmas.
The life of Jesus Christ teaches us the values of compassion, love, honesty, justice, humility, equity, piety, tolerance, forgiveness, and service to others. His birth in lowly, yet miraculous, circumstances did not prescribe his limits, and in facing trials, He demonstrated the power of faith.
As we celebrate the Prince of Peace, let us reject the negativity of the demagogues who seek to turn us against each other just because our faith and tongues may differ. Let us commit to peace and goodwill towards all. We can all, as Christians as well as Muslims, emulate the example of Jesus Christ. We can strive to be better than we are today, combining our faith with exemplary conduct.
Let us also reach out in love and compassion to our fellow citizens who are in distress at this festive season, and I particularly urge you all to remember the most vulnerables among us, especially the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
We pray to God Almighty that the blessings and lessons of Christmas will spread all through our Local Government and move us to be better people.

NIGERIA: FORUM OF SOUTH-EAST ACADEMIC DOCTORS APPEALS TO AIRLINES, ROAD TRANSPORT COMPANIES FOR AFFORDABLE FARES AT CHRISTMAS | The African Time Magazine
Dr. Uzor Ngoladi
Secretary-General, FOSAD

As the festive season approaches, the Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) is reaching out to airlines and bus companies, appealing for a pocket-friendly transport fares to South East Nigeria.
.
This request comes as a response to the economic challenges faced by many individuals and families; especially during the Christmas season when journey to be with loved ones is of paramount importance.
The spirit of Christmas is synonymous with togetherness and family reunions. However, the exorbitant cost of transportation poses a significant barrier to those who wish to travel to the South East to celebrate with their families and friends.
As a result, FOSAD is urging airlines and bus companies to consider the following points when charging transport fare in this yuletide season:
- Economic Strain: Many individuals and families have faced economic challenges in 2023, and the inflated transportation costs only exacerbate these difficulties. Reducing fares would enable more people to travel and partake in the joyous holiday celebrations.
- Enhancing Social Connection: The Christmas season is a time for families to come together and celebrate their shared traditions. Affordable transportation would contribute to strengthening social bonds by allowing more people to partake in these joyous occasions.
- Community Well-Being: Lowering transport fare aligns with the spirit of community support and corporate social responsibility. It demonstrates a commitment to the well-being of the community by facilitating the movement of people during this special time of the year.
- Boosting Local Economy: Affordable transportation can stimulate economic activities in the South East by encouraging increased travel, tourism, and local spending. This would have a positive impact on local businesses and contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
FOSAD as a pan Igbo association believes that by reducing transport fares, transport companies would not only contribute to the festive spirit but also make a meaningful difference in the lives of many individuals who aspire to spend the holidays with their loved ones in the South East.
We also encourage the five state governors of the South East and public spirited Ndigbo to provide free/subsidized buses that will convey Ndigbo to and fro major cities of Nigeria.
In the spirit of Christmas, we appeal to security agencies to avoid extortion and harassment of road travelers to the South East. The five state governors of the South East must ensure adequate security of lives and properties during the Christmas festivities.
FOSAD appreciates Ndigbo who have been donating buses to convey their people home at no cost in the past. We pray God almighty to bless and replenish you for the sacrifice you make for humanity.
NIGERIA: DICKSON AKOH HONOURED BY POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION ALONGSIDE ARTHUR EZE, PHILIP ADUDA, IFEANYI UBAH, OTHERS, AFFIRMS CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR NIGERIA POLICE | The African Time Magazine
Blessing Adure A, Reports from Nigeria

The Police Service Commission, today Tuesday, honoured Prof. Dickson A.O. Akoh, National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, with the Prestigious Award for philanthropy in the Police, for his invaluable contributions to the well-being and development of the Nigeria Police.

The honour was bestowed on Prof. Akoh at the 2023 Award Ceremony of the Commission to appreciate distinguished Nigerians that have shown remarkable commitments to the growth of the Nigeria Police.
In his keynote address, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon E. Arase, said the Award Ceremony was designed to identify and reward outstanding contributions to the overall development of the Nigeria Police. He further revealed that he inherited a Commission that was in a state of mutual distrust and suspicion with the Nigeria Police Force. The conflict, he said, was so intense that it led to litigation, but was completely resolved under his watch, at the end of the day.

The former Inspector General and Chairman of the Commission, stressed his commitment to ensuring healthy and productive relationship between the Commission, the Nigeria Police and the citizenry, assuring sustained improvement in the Service of the Commission to the Nigeria Police and that of the Police to all Nigerians.
Addressing a cross section of the Press after receiving his award, Prof. Dickson AKoh expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Commission for recognizing his contributions, stating that he would never take that gesture for granted in any wise.

Asked about the relationship of the Nigeria Police with the Peace Corps of Nigeria in the past and what he taught could have informed his nomination for such prestigious award by a revered government establishment as the Police Service Commission, the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria replied that he held no personal or organisational grudges against any officer of the Nigeria Police or the institution as a whole, as he considered whatever strained relationship in the past as inter-organisational differences, without hard feelings.

Prof. Akoh then took time to recount some of his benevolent gestures to the Nigeria Police which included the furnishing of the Office of the DPO of Otukpo Divisional Police Station in Benue State as far back as 2009, the purchase of communication gadgets for the Gwarimpa Divisional Police Station and Godab Estate Police outpost all in Abuja, the building of an Ultramodern Police Station in Ogboju and donation of operational van, building of another Police Station at Ugbobia community, all in Benue State. Also he mentioned his annual end of year token for some Divisional Police Stations in the FCT and countless welfare packages for officers and men of the Nigeria Police across board. He asserted that he did all that borne out of passion and goodwill for the Nigeria Police and the men of the Force, which he will continue to do timelessly.

On the issue of independent State Police, the National Commandant said rhe had little or nothing to say, but that he preferred talking about the concept of Community Policing which he felt was a brilliant innovation suitable for effective policing in Nigeria. He expressed reservation towards establishment of State Police structures in the country, citing the abuse of State Independent Electoral Commissions as clear example of malapplication of State institution to the detriment of the citizenry and to serve selfish interest of people in power.

Earlier in his special remarks, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, lauded the activities of the Police Service Commission, and said that as long as he remained the IGP, he and his team will continue to work harmoniously with the Police Service Commission to ensure that the Commission is taken to the highest level it was designed to attain. The IGP added that he would always remain willing and ready at all times to partner with the Commission to make sure that they have a smooth working relationship.

Some top personalities that were honoured alongside Prof. Akoh with the Prestigious Award for philanthropy in the Police included; Prince (Engr.) Authur Eze, Aare Adetola Emmanuel-King, Sen. Philip Tanimu Aduda, JP, MFR, CON, – Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ubah, CON, Mr Paul Odili, Sir (Dr.) Emeka Offor, Amb. (Dr.) Lawrence Oloche MON, and a host of others.

AfDB pledges $500 million for Groundbreaking Project linking three nations to boost Trade
The strategic Lobito Corridor aims to connect Angola, Zambia, and the DR Congo, connecting the mines to the Port in Angola.

Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina made the announcement at a special session of the Africa Investment Forum 2023 Market Days taking place in Marrakech, Morocco.
He said developing regional corridors would facilitate trade and reduce travel times on the corridors.
The African Development Bank has pledged $500 million to develop the strategic Lobito Corridor connecting Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to interlink countries and boost trade.
African Development Bank President, Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, made the announcement at a special session of the Africa Investment Forum 2023 Market Days taking place in Marrakech, Morocco.
“That is the Africa we want: a fully interconnected Africa, using regional corridor infrastructure and innovative regional financing instruments, to unleash economic opportunities and assure competitiveness of national and regional value chains. A well-connected Africa will be a more competitive Africa.”
Dr Adesina suggested five priority areas to fully optimize the benefits of the developing regional corridors across Africa. These include dedicating pooled financing facilities to corridor projects, building special industrial zones around the corridors to optimize existing infrastructure; adopting a systematic approach and platform to syndicate around the development of strategic regional corridors.
He said the development of regional corridors should be complemented with one-stop border posts to facilitate trade and reduce travel times on the corridors. He proposed concessional financing, such as the African Development Fund, which offers low-income countries unmatched resources to commit to developing regional corridors.
Other projects the Banks has invested in include the $20 billion Desert-to-Power initiative to develop 10 GW of solar power across 11 countries of the Sahel zone; the Mozambique-Beira corridor transport system; the $259million Kazungula bridge, which has already been commissioned; the $2.7 billion Nacala rail and port project in Mozambique, and the Lagos-Abidjan highway, which secured investment interest of $15.2 billion at the Africa Investment Forum last year.
The Desert to Power G5 Financing Facility aims to assist the G5 Sahel countries to adopt a low-emission power generation pathway by making use of the region’s abundant solar potential
As of 2022, the African Development Bank had invested $13.5 billion in funding 25 transport corridors, building more than 18,000 km of roads, establishing 27 border posts, and constructing 16 bridges.
NEW OCEAN FORMS AS AFRICAN LANDSCAPE REPORTEDLY SPLITS: IS THIS SCIENTIFIC STORY TRUE OR FALSE? | The African Time Magazine
Scientists have discovered a new ocean forming as Africa begins to split

In a remarkable breakthrough earlier this year, scientists discovered the formation of a new ocean as Africa begins to split.
Researchers have found that the two parts of land, which make up the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent, have started to separate – making way for a whole new ocean to run through the divide.
Countries like Zambia and Uganda could one day have their own coastlines if the land mass continues to separate.
According to the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters, geologists have been able to confirm that a new ocean is being created as the African continent is split in half.
Scientists have been able to locate the exact spot where, very deep underground, the continent – which has a land area of over 30 million square kilometres – first opened up.
The crack is positioned on the borders of three tectonic plates that have been gradually moving away from each other for a while now.
Geologists have noted that this complex tectonic process will make room for a totally new body of water millions of years from now.

The international effort has discovered that the crack, known as the East African Rift, currently runs 35 miles long after first appearing back in 2005 in the Ethiopian deserts.
“This is the only place on Earth where you can study how continental rift becomes an oceanic rift,” explained Christopher Moore, a Ph.D. doctoral student at the University of Leeds, via NBC News.
Moore utilised satellite radar technology to monitor volcanic activity in the East African region most commonly associated with the continent’s gradual breakup.
The crack resides on the borders of the boundaries of the African, Arabian and Somali tectonic plates and for the past 30 million years, the Arabian plate has been slowly moving away from the African continent.
This exact tectonic shift has been seen before as it is what created both the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden between the two connected landmasses.
Additionally, the Somali plate is also moving away from the African plate – peeling its way through the East African Rift Valley.
Through the use of GPS instruments, researchers have been able to make precise measurements of these land movements.
Ken Macdonald, a marine geophysicist and professor emeritus based at the University of California, explained: “With GPS measurements, you can measure rates of movement down to a few millimetres per year.
He added: “As we get more and more measurements from GPS, we can get a much greater sense of what’s going on.”
“The Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea will flood in over the Afar region and into the East African Rift Valley and become a new ocean, and that part of East Africa will become its own separate small continent,” Macdonald confirmed.
The three tectonic plates are moving away from each other at a range of differing speeds, but the geophysicist has explained that the Arabian plate is moving away from Africa at a rate of approximately one inch per year.
Both the African and Somali plate are reported to be breaking away at an even slower rate, at round half an inch to 0.2 inches every year.
